What Happened
Jagex cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a fresh-start mode with its own economy, 12 days after revealing it, after veterans said it would split the players.
The proposal
- The reveal. RuneScape is the long-running MMO from Jagex, the studio that revealed Reignited, a fresh-start mode, at RuneFest, the studio's 2026 fan event.
- A permanent character. Jagex's October 3 blog, "RuneScape as it was always meant to be", made it a permanent character type for RuneScape 3, the live game, launching December 2.
- Its own economy. Reignited characters got a brand-new economy with their own Grand Exchange, the player trading market, their own hiscores and no paid progression.
- Walled-off trading. They could trade only with other Reignited characters on Reignited-only worlds, and swapping gold into or out of Reignited was prohibited.
- A separate membership. It needed its own membership, similar to Ironman, the existing account type that plays without trading.
The backlash
- Veterans objected. Long-time players said a second economy would fracture the playerbase.
- Concerns in print. Jagex's October 6 post listed them verbatim, including "Veteran worlds will atrophy if the playerbase shifts to Reignited worlds."
- Apology, then revision. Jagex apologised in that same post and published a revised proposal on October 9.

The cancellation
- Gone on October 15. Creative director Mod Ryan cancelled Reignited in a blog post and a YouTube update, six days after the revision.
- His words. "It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it."
- The old scar. Mod Ryan tied the decision to a past combat change Jagex made against player feedback.
- One world. His pitch for December: "No split worlds, just you, me, and the many players coming in playing the game we all love together."

It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.

What still ships on December 2
- Newcomer tools. The update still adds the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey.
- A free trial. A 10-day free members trial runs December 2 to 12 for new characters and for players back after six months or more away.
- Roadmap unchanged. Jagex says its 2027 roadmap from RuneFest is unchanged, and the same show announced RuneScape 4, a new MMO built in Unreal Engine.
League Classic Ends in January
The same week, Riot said its own nostalgia mode, League Classic, ends in January 2027.
- The end date. A League of Legends /dev post on October 14, signed by Meddler and Pabro, says League Classic, Riot's throwback mode, ends in January 2027.
- The reason. Riot wrote that "most have gone back to other parts of League".
- The lesson. The same post says "sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back".

What This Means for the Riot MMO
Riot's MMO will have to decide whether newcomers get a separate fresh start, and Riot has said nothing about how its world is split.
- Split economies cost veterans. Jagex's own post put "Veteran worlds will atrophy" among the top fears, and that fear killed the mode.
- A launch-day decision. Whether newcomers get fresh-start servers is a call Riot's MMO makes at launch, and Riot has never put its server or world structure on the record.
- Riot has its own data. League Classic tells Riot what its players do with a throwback mode: most went back to the main game.
- Pricing reads loudly. A separate membership for one character type read as a second subscription; how Riot's MMO will charge is unannounced.
- Feedback moves faster. Jagex reversed a headline RuneFest feature in 12 days, quicker than its own announcement cycle.
Our read. Jagex's answer to the fresh-start question walled off the economy, the hiscores and the worlds, and its veterans refused it. Riot's MMO faces the same question at launch and every time it opens a new server, and its scope, server structure and business model are all unrevealed.
Jagex makes these calls in public. It made the fan tool everyone uses official, deleted 298 microtransactions and is building RuneScape 4 in Unreal Engine in the open. Riot has shown none of its MMO's systems, so the lessons land on Riot without a single player having to protest.
RuneScape's December update and free trial
The Adventure Guide and the 10-day trial arrive on one shared world.
League Classic ends
Riot closes its own throwback mode.
Your Take
Should Riot's MMO ever open fresh-start servers with their own economy?
Reported from Jagex's official posts and video, and Riot's October 14 /dev post. The MMO read is ours and clearly speculative. Analysis by RuneGrove.
